YOGYAKARTA, Yogyakarta: A magnitude 3.1 quake rattled Yogyakarta at around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, causing panic among residents but no casualties or damages.
According to the Yogyakarta Meteorology and Geophysics Agency, the epicenter of the quake was located where the Oya and Opak rivers converge in Pundong district, Bantul regency, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The quake was felt by residents as far away as Klaten, Purworejo and Magelang, all in Central Java.
Many residents raced from their homes when the earthquake struck. "It was the rumbling sound that we feared, reminding us of the May 27 earthquake," said Satria Nugraha of Kasongan, Bantul.
The quake also was felt in Kaliurang, about 25 kilometers from the epicenter. "I live on the second floor and the shock was quite strong. I ran out of the house screaming and I saw many people already outside their houses," said Syaifullah, who lives in Babadan Baru, Kaliurang.
