JAKARTA (JP): Thousands of flood victims Wednesday began flocking health centers, providing them with free health treatments in their temporary shelters.
As the flood receded in many parts of the city, many residents, particularly children, began suffering from various health problems like cough, skin diseases, diarrhea, respiratory problems.
There are clear concerns of possible epidemic disease outbreaks from contaminated water in Jakarta, said the European Commission, which pledged US$777,300 on Tuesday for flood victims.
Sri and hundreds of residents of Rawabuaya subdistrict in West Java queued for health treatment for her 8-year old baby provided by a non-governmental organization.
"She is continuously scratching her skin because of her skin disease. He suffered from it after wearing clothes washed with floodwater,"Sri told Elshinta news radio Wednesday.
Although health centers were opened by non-governmental organizations, city administration, political parties and other voluntary groups, many are still complained they have not been reached by free health cares due to large scale of flooding in the capital and its surroundings.
