JAKARTA (JP): Flooding in the Greater Jakarta covers wider areas Thursday as the rains continue to pour the capital on Tuesday.
The 30-centimeter high water covered Jl. M.H. Thamrin from Sarinah shopping center to Dukuh Atas, the main thoroughfares in Central Jakarta, Elshinta news radio said.
Severe traffic congestions occurred on Jl. Thamrin and other parts of the capital as water ponds were seen in many parts of the roads, according to the radio, citing a number of reports from its listeners.
Water Thursday also began inundating hundreds of houses in Rawabuaya subdistrict in West Jakarta where residents had tried to save their properties.
Other flood-hit areas include Cilincing in North Jakarta, Menteng in Central Jakarta, Kelapa Gading in East Jakarta. Rain water also inundated parts of the presidential office in Central Jakarta.
Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) Tuesday warned of heavy rains in the Greater Jakarta this week with downpours reached between 50 to 100 millimeters per day as compared to 30 to 40 millimeters in the previous week.
Water still inundates thousands of houses in Bekasi and one of the universities in the city.
IN Jakarta, the worst area hit by flood is Cawang subdistrict in East Jakarta and Kampung Melayu subdistrict, in East Jakarta as over thousands of residents fled their inundated houses.
Floods also hit Bidara Cina district also in East Jakarta as well as a number of subdistricts in South Jakarta like Kalibata, Pancoran, and Pejaten.
