JAKARTA (JP): The quality of well water that is consumed by half of Jakarta's households is not getting better last year, a survey said on Thursday.
The Jakarta administration's survey showed that 80 percent of 75 wells across the city produced water which had been infected by unhealthy substances.
"The quality of water between 10 and 20 meters in depth is steadily decrease that no longer fit for human consumption," Daniel Abbas, head of the BPLHD's environmental damage controlunit told The Jakarta Post.
The report, which will be published next month said that the well water was mainly polluted by bacteria such as e-coli.
The annual survey measures parameters of temperature, salinity, content of detergent, iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, and the biological substances of bacteria and viruses.
Daniel said that the high e-coli contamination in well water was due to the poor sewage system in the city as most of household waste went in to septic tank which located near the wells.
"People look proud for not slurping its septic tanks in a long period. They are not aware that the old septic talks could leak raw sewage into the groundwater supply," he said.
The supply of the clean water has long been a pressing proble in Jakarta.
