TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Starting from 2008, the implementation of the program of Land and Forest Rehabilitation Movement (Gerhan) will be financed by the State Budget. “We have not yet estimated the exact amount. It is still being discussed,” Director General of Land and Forestry Rehabilitation at the Department of Forestry M. Darori told Tempo. So far, Gerhan has been financed by reforestation funds.
According to Darori, the financial transfer was carried out because there were some new yearly activities in the program that requires large expenses. “In addition, since it is a trans-sectoral program, everyone will be responsible for it—not an individual or institution,” he said.
The planned related activities include rehabilitation of shallow reservoir areas and reforestation of subsidence-prone areas. “As for the new activities, we will require expenses of about Rp1 trillion,” he said.
The rehabilitation of shallow reservoirs will be focused on the Batutegi Reservoir (Lampung) and Wonogiri, that experience a water flow rate decreasing to three and four meters each. In addition, the rehabilitation of subsidence-prone areas will be focused on such regions as Aceh Naggroe Darussalam, West Java, CentralJava, North Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, North Moluccas, and Papua.
