AMBON, Maluku (Antara): A Lion Air MD 90 aircraft skidded Tuesday at the runway of Pattimura Airport in Ambon at 8:14 a.m. local time (6:14 a.m. Jakarta time) but there was no damage or fatalities.
A Lion Air executive, however said the plane did not skid and merely missed the turning point.
The airplane -- plying the Jakarta-Surabaya-Makassar-Ambon route -- was carrying 110 adult and five children passengers approached from west of the runway eastward. It slipped some eight meters from the runway edge. Passengers were reportedly to scream hysterically.
The airplane was then towed to the apron. The pilot in command was Capt. Imbuh Sasmita with Saiful as first officer. There were also four flight attendants aboard the flight JT 790.
Bad weather was believed to be the cause of the incident because it was raining hard with strong wind when the airplane landed.
Separately in Jakarta, Lion Air spokesman Hasyim Arzal Al Habsyi said the airplane only missed the turning point and did not skid.
"It is common if an airplane misses the turning point and we cannot call it an incident. The media should be more careful about using these technical terms," he said.
Hasyim said the plane missed the turning point because of heavy rain and strong wind with a speed of 10 knots.
