MALANG, East Java (Jakarta Post): Mount Semeru has shown a drastic decline in the number of volcanic earthquakes but remains at the third highest alert level.
Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park spokeswoman Nova Elina said Sunday in Malang, on normal day 100-150 earthquakes were recorded from the volcano but the figure had dropped to 20 quakes a day.
She said the declining activity was a cause for concern, since the volcano had not fully released its magma energy, which appeared to build up recently.
"Following the latest volcanic activity we decided to temporarily close the walking track to (the summit of) Mount Semeru," Nova said.
The volcano has continued to shower ash, reaching as far as Malang.
Motorist Muhammad Fauzi said he shut his helmet all the time while riding.
"If I don't close my helmet the dust gets into my eyes or my mouth."
