Serang (ANTARA News) - Dark clouds blanketed the foot of Mt Anak Krakatau in the Sunda strait, following a densely clouded sky blocking the sight of molten rocks, toxid gas and lava spewed from atop the volcano.
Officials of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center in Bandung, West Java, on Friday conducted a visual monitoring covering a radius of three kilometers of the point of eruption of Anak Krakatau.
In the meantime, volcanic quakes and tremors continued, but weather over the sea was very bad covering the hot clouds on the foot of Anak Krakatau.
Officials at the Anak Krakatau Monitong Post in Pasauran village, Cinangka subdistrict, Serang regency, on Friday from 6 a.m to 6 p.m West Indonesia Time said that there have been 182 eruptions coupled with 11 volcanic quakes, eight deep volcanic tremors, 54 shallow volcanic shocks, 44 tremors, and spewing smokes 29 times, but not too threatening. There were even two 2-minute tectonic shoks, but not dangerous.
Budiman, of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center in Bandung, said that the number of eruptions, volcanic shocks and tremors throughout Friday had declined compared to Thursday, during which there had been 195 eruptions, eruptions followed by 7 deep volcanic tremors, 49 shallow volcanic shocks, and 18 tremors.
All these means that the activity of Anak Krakatau is still fluctuating each day without major eruptions and volcanic shocks, such as what had happened in 1883.
Right now Anak Krakatau is still spewing molten rocks, hot clouds, and toxic gas, and still on third level of alertness. He therefore urged visitors and fishermen to stay away from the foot of Anak Krakatau.
He said his office is still monitoring the activity of Anak Krakatau in anticipation of bigger eruptions and a tsunami
