Indonesia has urged negotiators in the upcoming climate talks in Bonn, Germany, not to ignore the Copenhagen accord, otherwise the countries will start from scratch in efforts to reach a binding treaty on emissions reduction.
Indonesian chief negotiator Rachmat Witoelar said Tuesday the results of the Copenhagen conference should help in the formulation of a new treaty.
“For Indonesia, the Copenhagen accord is one of the stepping stones to reach an agreement in Cancun, Mexico,” he said.
“We can disagree with the process used to make the Copenhagen accord, but the results are crucial to addressing climate change.”
Around 20 negotiators from Indonesia will leave for Bonn on Wednesday for the talks on the long-delayed emissions cut target. A total of 190 countries will be represented at the meeting from April 9-11, to discuss organizational matters ahead of the climate summit in Cancun in December.
Rachmat said at least five points of the Copenhagen accord, in particular the recognition of the reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation scheme (REDD plus), were in line with Indonesia’s interests.
