KUPANG: Legislative councilors of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) responded to the reported food crisis in several regencies saying the respective regents should be held responsible for the situation.
Antonius Landi from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) said that the food crisis occurred because regents had failed to heed the precautionary warning by the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) over the prospect of a drastic decline in rainfall and the premature arrival of drought.
"Food crisis due to a drop in agricultural yields should not occur because the BMKG had warned us about that," he said Thursday.
He said the BMKG warning carried consequences regarding what planting method the farmers should adopt and what plant species could survive with low rainfall.
Nico Nuhan, head of the NTT self-management food team deployed to survey the food crisis, found 369 villages faced risk of a food crisis with 56 categorized as inside the "red zone". - JP
