TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Department of Industry wants to reindustrialize all sectors, including the coconut industry, a tropical plant spread around the archipelago.
“This is part of the national reindustrialization policy,” said Deputy Minister of Industry Alex Retraubun at a press conference in his office, Jakarta, Thursday (8/4).
According to Alex, the reindustrialization policy from 2010 to 2014 targets a growth of the strong coconut treatment industry.
“This is an Indonesian competence which has been disregarded for long,” he said.
Alex confirmed that the Department of Industry will increase the productivity of the coconut treatment industry which is still being managed conventionally.
Currently, said Alex, the coconut industry has not been managed optimally so its added value is still low.
Indonesia has 3.8 hectares of coconut plantations, 98 percent of which is owned by farmers.
The three biggest coconut plantation areas are in Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi.
Alex explained that the coconut processing reindustrialization will directly affect farmers at the base level.
In the future, said Alex, the measure that will be taken is to increase raw material supply.
“The next will be to maximize the processing industry capacity,” he said.
