Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale shook West Java`s district town of Sukabumi at 2.48 early on Friday.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) here on Friday, the epicenter of the earthquake is recorded at 7.88 degrees southern latitude and 106.41 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 km under the sea level.
The epicenter is about 120 km southwest of Sukabumi, 157 km southeast of Ujungkulon, 169 km southwest of West Java provincial capital of Bandung and about 195 km southwest of Jakarta.
It has no potentials to create a tsunami.
On August 19, 2010, an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale also shook the southern coast of West Java with an epicenter at 9.42 degrees southern latitude and 107.02 degrees western longitude, about 267 km southwest Tasikmalaya. It was at a depth of 10 km.
According to the BMKG, Sukabumi in West Java is highly prone to earthquakes.
The problem is that Sukabumi has two Cimandiri river flow faults in the waters of Palabuhanratu and Balibis in North Sukabumi, which made Sukabumi as a quake-prone region with very great strength in Java island.
Head of the seismological center of BMKG Suhardjono said recently that the disclosure was not meant to frighten people of Sukabumi. Not only Sukabumi, but other areas in the southern parts of Javas are equally prone to quakes, he said.
He warned people living along the southern coast who are directly facing the sub-duction zone between Australia and Eurasia in the the Java basin in the Indian Ocean.
