Bogor, W Java (ANTARA News) - The ecosystem of birds in Indonesia will become extinct following the decreasing green open spaces due to economic growth which caused a change of the ecosystem into urban areas.
The statement was made by Ria Saryanthi, Conservation Programmer of Indonesian birds, better known as Association of Indonesian Wild Birds Conservation on Tuesday observing the United Nations World Habitat Day.
She said World Habitat Day is an annual opportunity for a reflection of how to build a better city for all of us.
"Hoogerwerf, a Dutch naturalist, noted in Jakarta back in 1948 that there were still 256 bird species. But a survey by a conservation NGO in Jakarta found in the 2006-2007 period that there were only 121 bird species, including coastal birds," she said.
The outcome of a survey in six major cities in Java and Bali demonstrated that one of three homes kept birds in cages, while birds are living freely anywhere else, she said.
