Salatiga, C Java (ANTARA News) - A total of 2,024 villages in Central Java Province were vulnerable to landslide disasters, a government official said here Tuesday.
Head of the Central Java Provincial Energy and Mineral Resources Office Teguh Dwi Paryono said that the fragile condition was based on the outcome of a 2002-2009 evaluation and mapping of soil vulnerability.
"The mapping of vulnerable villages refers to the result of evaluation of soil vulnerability from 2002 to 2009. The number of areas which are prone to landslides increases steadily," he said.
Speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of a workshop on landslides in Central Java here, he said the most frequent occurrences of landslides in the province were found in 2006.
Along the year, 109 landslides occurred in Central Java. This year, he said a study of soil movements in Semarang city, Grobogan, Jepara, Kendal, Kudus, Pekalongan, and Batang was being conducted.
Besides that study, his men also evaluated a mapping of soil movements and vulnerability in 27 districts and towns.
"We have sent letters to authorities in 27 districts/towns to anticipate landslide disasters during the rainy season by referring to the meteorology and geophysics office`s rainfall intensity prediction," he said.
Meanwhile, Head of the Central Java Province`s Emergency Disaster Unit Priyantono Djarot Nugroho said there were 11 vulnerable districts and towns.
They were Brebes, Pemalang, Pekalongan, Banjarnegara, Temanggung, Wonosobo,
Purworejo, Banyumas, Cilacap, Karanganyar, and Semarang city."These vulnerable spots are generally located in hilly areas," he said.
Therefore the district governments, whose areas were vulnerable to the landslides, were asked to be cautious with highly intensive soil movements, he said.
The authorities were also asked to anticipate the eventualities through the sound of the early warning and emergency response systems, he said.
"The district governments must have prepared natural disaster task forces well whose members consist of related authorities and society members," he said.
