Fast moving consumer goods firms Unilever, Nestle and Danone made up the top three places in the inaugural Tomorrow’s Value Ratings list, which rates firms on social and environmental issues.
The ten largest food and beverage companies in the world have been ranked on the way they manager their social and environmental performance - and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) firms Unilever, Nestle and Danone came out on top.
Unilever, which boasts brands such as Bertolli and Lipton, led the way in the inaugural Tomorrow’s Value Rating list from international sustainability consultancy Two Tomorrows, achieving a score of 64 per cent.
The report said: “Unilever’s comprehensive sustainability strategy is based on stakeholder feedback, governed by the company’s senior leaders and underpinned by solid management systems.
“Its performance on important variables such as carbon emissions and water usage has shown marked improvements over the years.”
Meanwhile second and third-placed companies Nestle and Danone stood out for their approach to supply-chain management and efforts to reach consumers at the bottom of the pyramid respectively. Soft-drink rivals Pepsi and Coca-Cola completed the top five list.
Anheuser-Busch InBev, Kraft, Heineken, Tyson and Kirin Holdings - in that order - made up the rest of the top ten.
