Nearly 8,000 of the total 28,740 hectares of Pagaralam Conservation Forest in South Sumatra have been severely damaged by being converted to public plantations, a government official says.
Pagaralam administration forest and plantationn chief Hasan Bahrin Ibnu said the damaged areas were in Dingin and Batok Hills as well as in Tebat Benawah, Tebad Lereh and Kerinjing hamlets.
Despite the damage, the administration has started a reforestation program in 500 hectares of land in Kerinjing hamlet, Hasan added.
“We will optimize the reforestation program to counter the damage in Pagaralam,” he told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
