Garut regent has issued a circular letter requiring couples planning to get marriage and couples wanting to separate to plant trees before officials could process their requests, Antara reported on Monday.
Murni Kurniati and Sholehuddin who tied knots on Sunday complied with the circular letter and planted three trees on the garden behind the Cikajang grand mosque in Garut. They promised to plant 22 more trees on their family land.
During the wedding ceremony in the mosque, the head of Garut's forestry agency, Edi Muharam, gave a marriage sermon, focusing on the importance of tree planting to save the environment from the dangers of climate change.
In its circulate latter, dated February 13, Garut regent Aceng H.M. Fikri required newly-wed couples to plant at least 10 trees, while married couples wanting to separate to plant at least 50 trees.
