TEMPO Interactive, Palu:Around 50 wood processing companies in Palu, Central Sulawesi, have been shut down due to a shortage in raw materials for the last three years. Hundreds of workers face unemployement.
Palu Industry, Trade, and Cooperative Office chief in charge of Industry, Fathi Zubaidi, said each company was hiring 20 – 30 people. There are currently only 10 companies still surviving. The restriction on wood utilization license also resulted in difficulties in getting materials. Security officers have also intensified their monitoring over illegal logging.
The price of processed wood for household needs in Palu has now skyrocketed by 150 percent compared to the previous two years.
