Jakarta, Indonesia (AHN) - A powerful undersea earthquake measuring 5.9 magnitude on the Rossi-Forrel scale struck Moluccas Island in Indonesia on Saturday. Authorities said they had not received any reports of casualties or damage to properties.
Indonesia's meteorological agency said the epicenter of the quake was located 72 miles southwest of Ternate at a depth of 29 miles. The tremor was recorded at 2008 GMT, the agency said.
The quake was felt strongly in Ternate and Labuha a few miles from the south. The agency dismissed any danger a tsunami might be triggered by the tremor.
Indonesia is frequently hit by earthquakes caused by frequent seismic and volcanic activity as it sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire where continental plates meet.
In December 2004, over 168,000 people in Indonesia's Aceh province were killed in the worst earthquake-triggered Asian tsunami.
