JAMBI, Jambi Province (Antara) : Dozens of wild elephants recently destroyed at least 30 huts and agricultural fields in a village near Sumatran jungle, Jambi province, official says.
Spokesman of Kerinci regental administration Amirsyam said Tuesday the incident occurred in Sipurak village, Batang Merangin district, near the Kerinci Seblat National Park, some 380 kilometers away from Jambi city.
He did not mention the exact date of the incident, which was believed caused by the narrowing habitats of the wild animals in the area due to continuing conversions of forest lands into housings, plantations and agricultural fields.
Residents living near Sumatran jungles were often bothered by the coming of wild animals like elephants and tigers, which killed a number of villagers as well as their livestock.
Amirsyam said there was no casualty in the last incident, but it sparked anger of villagers, who expressed their wish to hunt those wild animals.
