Jember, East Java (ANTARA News) - The population of bulls in Meru Betiri national park (TNMB) in Bande Alit, Jember, East Java Province, has increased by more than 100 percent, from 42 to 160 bulls currently.
The national park in cooperation with the police and military personnel had managed to protect the wildlife and even help boost the population of wild bulls, Setyo Purbowo, a staff member of TNMB, said here on Monday.
However, he estimated that the actual number of wild bulls in the 20,000-hectare national park was much more that those identified.
Local residents living surrounding the national park were concerned about the increasing number of bulls because some of the animals started to attack nearby residential areas.

Apart from bulls, the national park is also habitat of deers, and spotted tigers.
The tigers estimated to be tens of them, were endangered due to human encroachment in the park, he said.
To protect the wild animals, the TNMB authority has intensified monitoring and patrolling of the national park in cooperation with the police and military personnels, he said.
