Germany has pledged €13.5 million ($14 million) for a forest and biodiversity
conservation program in Sulawesi, state-run news agency Antara has reported.
The funding
will be invested in the Forest Progam III, which is part of Indonesian-German
REDD+ cooperation, and is focussed on the Palu/Miu watershed and Lore Lindu
National Park in Central Sulawesi.
A
feasibility study, which looked at biodiversity conservation and watershed
rehabilitation, as well as land use conflict in the area, was carried out last
year.
Antara
reported on Friday that the agreement is due to be signed by Germany’s
ambassador to Indonesia, Georg Witschel, and Robert Pakpahan, the Finance
Ministry’s risk management directorate, on Monday.
Germany and
Indonesia have cooperated on REDD+ projects in the past, including the Forest
for Climate Change Program (FORCLIME), which aimed to reduce Indonesia’s
greenhouse gas emissions from the forestry sector.
