Mayon volcano in Legazpi city, Albay province, continues to spew ash for the fourth straight day Thursday as viewed from a passenger plane about 500 kilometers (300 miles) south of Manila, Philippines. The country's most active volcano remains on "alert level 3" and residents are still prohibited from venturing into the 6-kilometer (3.75-mile) permanent danger zone. In December 2006, ash deposits from previous eruption rolled down its slopes at the onslaught of a typhoon, killing more than a thousand residents living around the cone-shaped volcano.
