A farmer sprays pesticide onto his paddy fields in Cilacap, Central Java, on Monday. Fertilizer prices have risen more than 50 percent this year from Rp 60,000 (around US$6) per 50 kilograms to between Rp 90,000 and Rp 100,000. Higher costs have undermined farmers’ incomes, along with less profitable harvest time prices due to speculation by brokers. (JP/Agus Maryono)
