TEMPO Interactive, Purwokerto:The Forestry Service is making available 1.2 million seeds to be planted on 12,000 hectares of critically damaged land in Banyumas regency, East Java province. "The areas are included in the land and forest rehabilitation programs currently being processed," said Banyumas Forestry Service chief Joko Wikanto yesterday.
The damaged land mostly belong to residents in the sub-districts of Gumelar, Purwojati, Lumbir, Wangon, Ajibarang, Pekeuncen, and other areas located on slopes.
According to Joko, there are 10 types of seeds to be planted in critical or fallow land, such as those consisting of trees providing protective shade and plants being kept from extinction. Some of seeds include native trees such as mahogany, beringin, petai, jengkol, aren, gaharu, merbau, sukun, coconut and sengon.
A total of 1.214.866 seeds have been or are ready to be planted. "We planted around 4.000 seeds of many kinds of trees on school grounds," he said.
