MALANG, East Java: The Malang Corruption Watch will appeal a verdict handed down by the Malang District Court in a land dispute case on the use of a greenbelt area by the municipality.
The group's coordinator, Luthfi J. Kurniawan, found the decision by the court on May 8 did not reflect a sense of fairness toward the public, claiming the panel of judges did not make their decision based on legal guidelines.
"We believe the judges did not consider academic and scientific aspects in making their decision," Luthfi said.
The group will later conduct a scientific and academic study on the court ruling made by the judges, the results of which will be publicized in order to ascertain the public's view.
The land dispute case between residents and the municipality involves a 1,080-meter plot of land located in Oro-Oro Dowo subdistrict, Klojen district, in Malang city.
The municipality planned to build a new subdistrict office on the land, which is still being used as a city park. But the plan was rejected by local residents who claim the land is part of the city's greenbelt area and should be protected.
