MANADO, North Sulawesi (Antara): A tectonic earthquake measuring 6.1 on Richter Scale Saturday jolted North Sulawesi. There was no immediate report of damage or casualty.
The epicenter of the earthquake occurring at around 9.18 a.m. was located at 1.17 degrees northern latitude and 126.51 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 39 kilometers below Maluku Sea or about 200 kilometers east of Manado, Subardjo, head of the Manado Meteorology and Geophysics office, said.
The earthquake was felt by residents in Manado.
The moderate earthquake, however, did not trigger a subsequent tsunami in North Sulawesi and North Maluku.
Indonesia sits on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, and experiences frequent earthquakes - as well as tsunami triggered by underwater earthquakes.
On December 26, 2004, Aceh Province and Nias Island (North Sumatra Province) were devastated by a massive earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale and a subsequent deadly tsunami, which killed at least 170,000 people and rendered around one million people homeless.
