BANDA ACEH, Aceh Province (Antara): Banda Aceh and itssurrounding areas Wednesday were jolted by an earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located at the coordinate of 5.18 northern latitude and 95.24 eastern longitude, at a depth of 33 kilometers under the sea, some 42 kilometers southwest of Banda Aceh, said Syahnan, head of the Mata Ie Geophysics Office.
The tremor occurred about 2 a.m, which was fifth aftershock within one month. The strongest aftershock hit Banda Aceh on April 27, 2007, measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale.
Aceh Province is frequently jolted by aftershocks reaching up to 15 to 20 times daily following a massive earthquake devastating the province on December 26, 2004.
The 8.9-magnitude earthquake and a subsequent tsunami devastated Aceh and Nias Island (North Sumatra), killing at least 170,000 people and destroying most of the infrastructures.
