Pemalang, Central Java (ANTARA News) - The activity of Mt. Slamet located between the districts of Tegal and Pemalang in Central Java has been increasing since the past two weeks following the high rainfalls in the districts.
An attendant at the volcano control post in Gambuhan village, Pulosari subdistrict in Pemalang, Sukedi, said here Sunday that signs of the increasing volcanic activity like billows of smokes from the crater have been seen since the past two weeks.
He pointed out that the 3,428-meter high volcano has spewed smokes up to a hundred meters in diameter from its peak, however, the volcanic activity was still considered normal and did not jeopardize people living on the slope of the mountain.
He said the volcanic smokes were clearly seen from Central Java provincial capital of Semarang or from the eastern part of the highest mountain in the province.
"The signs of the increasing volcanic activity are also felt with the increasing temperature on the mountainous areas and the billows of smokes with sharp sulfuric smell," he said.
The increasing volcanic activity would bring about climate change in the surrounding areas like Pemalang, Tegal and Purwokerto, he said, adding, "the temperature will increase and it will be cloudy".
