Sections of the dike built to contain the Lapindo mud flow in Sidoardjo, East Java, are in danger of collapsing due to land subsidence of the entire mud containment area.
“All points are prone to subsidence,” Sidoarjo Mudflow Mitigation Agency (BPLS) spokesman Achmad Khusairi said on Tuesday, adding that the condition of the dikes endangered the safety of workers.
He said one solution was to build a new mud catchment on the north side of the dike because the old catchment had reached overcapacity.
Four areas of the dike have collapsed in the past five months. In December, part of the dike situated in Glagaharum village crumbled, resulting in mud and water washing into rice fields and houses in Gempolsari village.
Residents living in Gempolsari village said the incident traumatized them.
“Our houses were flooded and we were forced to evacuate,” a Gempolsari resident, Nurul Khasanah, said as reported by tempointeraktif.com.
