Garut (ANTARA News) - One person was killed and 28 houses were buried by a landslide and mud flows in Pakenjeng subdistrict, 71 kilometers south of Garut, West Java on Friday.
The dead victim, Ade Rochman (60), was buried Saturday night after being evacuated from a land pile, the subdistrict head, Jajat Darajat, said.
Ade who is survived by a wife, three children and two grandchildren, had been buried since Friday evening when the landslide occurred.
He was straingtening up water currents in his field when suddenly soil from the slope of a few-hundred-meter-high hill came loose and fell on him, Jajat said.
Villagers tried to find his body but failed because night had fallen and it was raining heavily.
The search was continued on Saturday and his body was later found in the evening.
The location was about 11 kilometers away and could only be reached from the subdistrict capital by foot after four hours because there were dozens of landslide locations along the way.
Several bridges were also cut hindering the mobility of the villagers. Hundreds of students were unable to go to school because the roads to their schools had been cut off.
