JAKARTA (Jakarta Post) : In a joint raid with several wildlife organizations, the Jakarta Police seized 15 protected endangered species from Jatinegara market in East Jakarta.
Two traders, Agus Sobari and Sarwo, were arrested and the animals handed over to the Animal Rescue Center Tegal Alur.
The protected species consisted of two leopards, eight slow lorises, two Malayan porcupines, one otter civet and two black-winged cats. Some were reportedly in poor health.
"The traders violated the 1990 law on natural resources and the ecosystem," executive director of the Institute of Animal Advocacy Irma Hermawati said in a press statement.
ProFauna Indonesia chairman Rosek Nursahid suggested seizures like this one in Jatinegara be conducted in other animal markets in Surabaya, which was still selling protected wildlife freely.
